Wall & Ceiling Repairs

Wall & Ceiling Repairs in Bridgwater

Patch repairs after leaks, removed fireplaces and rewiring, blended in so there's no visible line once painted.

A patch is harder than a whole wall. You're matching a finish someone else set, at a depth you didn't choose, and any step between old and new catches the light for as long as the wall is there.

One of my Google reviews is a ceiling patched after a water leak in exactly this way. That job is typical: cut back to something sound, check the leak is actually fixed, build it back to the right depth, then feather the finish out far enough that the join disappears.

I always look at why the damage happened. Plastering over damp traps it in the wall and you will be looking at the same stain by spring. I'd rather tell you that up front than take the money twice.

What's included

  • Damaged area cut back to sound material
  • Cause checked before anything is closed up
  • Backing built out to match the existing depth
  • Finish feathered into the surrounding surface
  • Invisible once decorated

How wall & ceiling repairs works

  1. Find out whyBefore anything is closed up I check what caused it. Plastering over an unfixed leak just hides it until spring.
  2. Cut back to soundThe damaged area is cut back to material that's actually holding, not feathered over the edge of a problem.
  3. Build back to depthBacking coat built out to match the existing wall, so the repair sits flush rather than proud or hollow.
  4. Feather inFinish coat taken well past the repair so the join disappears once it's painted.

Common questions about wall & ceiling repairs

My ceiling is stained after a leak, does the whole thing need replacing?

Usually not. If the plaster is still firmly attached and only stained, it can often be sealed and skimmed. If it's soft, sagging or has come away from the laths above, that section needs cutting out and replacing. I can tell which after seeing it.

Should I fix the leak first?

Yes, always. Plastering over active damp traps moisture in the wall and the stain comes straight back through. If the leak isn't sorted I'll tell you to get that done first, even though it means waiting for the work.

Can you make good after a fireplace is removed?

Yes, that's a common job. The opening gets blocked and boarded, then plastered and feathered into the surrounding wall so there's no line where the chimney breast was.

What about cracks that keep coming back?

A crack that returns is usually movement rather than a plastering fault. Filling it again won't help. I'll look at where it runs and tell you honestly whether it's a plastering job or something structural.

Will the repair be visible?

Not once it's painted, if it's done properly. The trick is feathering the finish far enough past the repair that there's no step for the light to catch.
