Rendering

Rendering in Bridgwater

External render on houses, extensions and garden walls, finished to weather properly and look right from the road.

Render is the first thing anyone sees and the layer taking the weather all year. Done properly it protects the wall behind it for decades; done badly it cracks, holds water and costs more to put right than it did to apply.

What goes on depends on what's underneath. Modern block takes a different specification to old stone, and the two need different materials, putting a hard cement render on a wall that needs to breathe traps moisture inside the building. I check which you've got before quoting.

I do full elevations, extensions and smaller jobs like garden and boundary walls.

What's included

  • Substrate checked and prepared
  • Beading and stop-ends set true
  • Render applied in coats to the correct thickness
  • Finish worked to the texture you want
  • Site left clean

How rendering works

  1. Check the wallModern block and old stone need different materials. I check what you've got before quoting a specification.
  2. Prepare and beadSurface cleaned and prepared, beads and stop-ends set true so lines are straight and edges are protected.
  3. Render in coatsApplied in coats to the correct thickness, each allowed to go off properly before the next.
  4. Finish and clearWorked to the texture you've chosen, then the site cleared and washed down.

Common questions about rendering

How long does render last?

Done properly on a sound wall, decades. Most render failures aren't the render, they're moisture getting in behind it from a failed gutter, a bridged damp course or the wrong specification for the wall.

Can you render over old render?

Sometimes, if the existing render is well bonded and sound. If it's hollow when tapped it has to come off, because anything applied over it fails with it.

What's the difference between sand and cement and modern renders?

Traditional sand and cement is hard-wearing and cost-effective. Modern silicone and acrylic renders are more flexible, come pre-coloured and don't need painting. On an older breathable wall a lime render is often the right answer instead. I'll explain which suits your wall.

Do you render garden and boundary walls?

Yes. Smaller jobs like garden walls, porches and extension elevations are very welcome, not just full houses.

What time of year can rendering be done?

Most of the year, but not in frost and not in beating rain, render needs to cure steadily. Very hot direct sun is a problem too because it dries too fast and cracks. I'll be honest if the forecast means waiting a week.
